Sport Today Round-up (31/07)
With little of note happening in the football world, we have to turn to gossip in an attempt to stir up some excitement.
Gareth Barry’s transfer saga takes another turn today as it was revealed that Liverpool have once again been thwarted in their attempts to sign him, this time due to their punctuality. The Reds missed their deadline by around 20 minutes, enough for Martin O’Neill to pull the deal off the table…again. However, with another month to go before the transfer window slams shut, Barry has more than enough time to throw another strop and demand a transfer…again.
Spurs have moved one step closer in their mission to sign every attacking midfielder in the world with the acquisition of David Bentley from Blackburn. The highly rated young Englishman faces abuse from his former club Arsenal though, as he is only the 5th player to cross over the North London divide between the rivals. Tottenham are also reported to be nearing a deal with Andrei Arshavin, although his club Zenit St. Petersburg appear to be unaware of this.
The latest news on Cristiano Ronaldo is that he intends to ask for a transfer to Real Madrid within the next week. This will give him more than enough time then to ask to stay, ask to go once more and then sulk because everyone stopped paying him attention.
Portsmouth are apparently under pressure to keep FA Cup winning manager Harry Redknapp after CSKA Moscow expressed an interest in acquiring the renowned wheeler dealer. Russia’s oil riches could prove enticing to the Englishman, who has become notorious for his ability to strike a deal armed with nothing more than someone else’s millions.
David Moyes’ future at Everton seems to have been assured, at least for the short-term, as he is believed to be close to signing a new contract. After the contract is sorted it is assumed that he may finally buy a player, although that has yet to be confirmed.
Finally, Robbie Savage has slipped a further rung down the football ladder after being informed that he may not be good enough for Derby. The former Blackburn midfielder was left out of the club’s pre-season games and may have to descend further down the Football League in a quest to find someone who will actually play him.
